Senator Austin Akobundu has hailed the rich culture of the Igbo people, as epitomised by the celebration of the New Yam festival across Igboland. He described it as an age-long unifying factor and called for its sustenance by present and future generations.
Senator Akobundu made the remarks at the recently held Iri Ji Ibeku, organised by the Ibeku Egwu Asaa Development Association (IEADA) in collaboration with the highly revered Ibeku Council of Ndi Eze.
The colourful event, which took place at Umuajiji Isieke Market Square, Ibeku, in Umuahia North LGA, celebrated a rich and ancient tradition, a noble rite of thanksgiving to God for the blessings of a bountiful harvest.
In his speech, Senator Akobundu, who was represented by Hon. Lawrence Okezie Odoemelem (IKEMBA-Ibeku), thanked the leadership of IEADA, the revered traditional rulers, Ndi Ichie, and the people of Ibeku for the honour of the invitation as Special Guest. He noted that he has always held the Ibeku people in high esteem and deeply values the cordial relationship shared with them. He further pledged his continued support for the community and for the promotion of Ibeku’s rich cultural heritage.
He concluded with prayers that the Iri Ji festival would bring renewed blessings upon Ibeku land, strengthen peace and unity among her people, and usher in greater prosperity and progress for all her sons and daughters, both at home and in the diaspora.
