According to the update, the relocation to Okigwe Park will be on a temporary basis, with authorities confirming that no fees will be charged for shop or space allocation during this period.
Officials also disclosed that more space will become available for the traders once vehicles currently operating at Okigwe Park are moved to the newly completed Umuahia Bus Terminal, where transport activities are expected to be centralized.
The traders are expected to remain at the temporary site until the completion of a new market under construction at Afara, which will serve as a permanent location.
The relocation is scheduled to take place in the coming days, ahead of the official commissioning of the Umuahia Bus Terminal.
Meanwhile, the government noted that the ongoing demolitions around the Isi Gate axis, particularly near the Shoprite area, are part of a broader plan to improve the city’s aesthetics and align Umuahia with modern capital city standards.
Authorities further revealed that railway services are set to return to the area, alongside plans to beautify the Isi Gate corridor as part of the urban renewal initiative.
