The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) has confirmed that elections into the 27 Local Government Area chairmanship positions and 305 councillorship seats in the state will hold on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
The commission made this known in a press release dated September 11, 2026, signed by its Chairman, Chief Charles Ejiogu, JP.
According to the statement, the elections will be conducted across 4,758 polling units in Imo State.
ISIEC urged all registered political parties and other critical stakeholders to take note of the election date and make the necessary preparations.
The commission said the election is being conducted in line with its September 18, 2025, “360 days’ Notice of Election”, issued pursuant to Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, as amended.
The electoral body also disclosed that consultations with critical stakeholders are currently ongoing ahead of the polls.
The confirmation puts to rest, at least for now, uncertainty surrounding the date for the 2026 Imo State Local Government Council elections, with political parties and candidates expected to intensify preparations for the exercise.
