The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, is scheduled to visit Abia State on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, where she will join Governor Alex Otti and his wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, in celebrating the state’s renowned Akwete weaving heritage.
According to a statement issued by the Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the First Lady will tour the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Society in Akwete, Ukwa East Local Government Area. During the visit, she is expected to interact with master weavers and witness the traditional craftsmanship that has made Akwete weaving one of Nigeria’s most celebrated cultural exports.
Following the inspection of the cooperative, Senator Tinubu and Governor Otti will proceed to the Akwete Central School Field, where a grand civic reception has been organised in honour of the First Lady.
The reception, scheduled to commence at 10:00 a.m., is expected to attract government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, women and youth groups, stakeholders, and residents from across the state. The event will also serve as a platform to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Akwete and the significance of its centuries-old weaving tradition.
The Abia State Government has called on residents, particularly those in Ukwa East Local Government Area and neighbouring communities, to turn out in large numbers to give the First Lady a warm and memorable welcome.
