The Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly has reaffirmed the commitment of the state legislature to protecting the rights, dignity and future of the girl child, urging young girls across Abia State to remain focused on their dreams despite societal challenges and gender-based discrimination.
In a goodwill message marking the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, celebrated on October 11, the Speaker described girls as special, unique and phenomenal individuals with limitless potential to become future leaders, innovators and agents of positive change.
Addressing young girls in Aba and other parts of Abia State, the Speaker encouraged them never to allow gender stereotypes, discrimination or societal limitations to undermine their confidence and aspirations.
The Speaker acknowledged the challenges confronting girls, including abuse, exploitation, inequality and limited access to essential opportunities, while stressing the importance of creating a society where every girl can thrive without fear or discrimination.
Highlighting the legislative efforts of the Abia State House of Assembly towards protecting vulnerable persons, the Speaker recalled the passage of the Abia State Centre for the Rehabilitation of Survivors of Rape, Defilement, Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking Law of 2026, which was signed into law by Governor Alex Otti during the second quarter of the year.
According to the Speaker, the legislation demonstrates the commitment of the state government and legislature to addressing sexual violence, domestic abuse, human trafficking and other forms of exploitation affecting vulnerable members of society.
The Speaker further emphasised that every girl deserves access to quality education, healthcare and protection from violence, regardless of her background or circumstances.
Describing education as a fundamental tool for empowerment and personal development, the Speaker urged girls to remain in school, pursue their passions and continuously acquire the knowledge and skills needed to achieve their ambitions.
The Speaker also encouraged girls to speak out against injustice, inequality and discrimination, reminding them that their voices matter in shaping the future of society.
Parents, guardians and caregivers were equally urged to prioritise the welfare, education and empowerment of the girl child by providing the necessary support, guidance and opportunities for personal growth.
The Speaker commended Governor Alex Otti’s administration for its people-oriented approach to governance, expressing optimism that continued collaboration between the executive and legislative arms of government would strengthen efforts towards building a more inclusive and equitable society.
The Speaker reiterated the commitment of the Abia State House of Assembly to supporting policies and legislation that promote equal opportunities, protect vulnerable girls and create an enabling environment for young people to realise their full potential.
The message concluded with a call for collective responsibility in building a brighter future where every girl child is valued, respected, protected and empowered to succeed.
