Former member of the Abia State House of Assembly representing Umunneochi State Constituency, Barrister Okey Igwe, has officially defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Igwe, who was also the former Deputy Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under the Guber ticket of Late Prof Uche Ikonne, announced his intention to contest the Abia North Senatorial seat under the platform of the NDC.

Sources close to the former lawmaker confirmed that his defection and senatorial ambition are part of preparations ahead of the next election cycle in Abia State.

If elected, Igwe is expected to challenge for the seat currently occupied by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.

According to his resignation letter cited by Ireporta he resigned from the African Democratic Congress ADC on the 4th of May 2026.
