Senator Austin Akobundu, on Monday, October 24, 2026, commended Governor Alex Otti and Hon. Sam Onuigbo over efforts at getting the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road reconstructed.

Senator Akobundu made the commendation in Ikwuano and Umuahia North LGAs, respectively, during the inauguration of Atiku/Akobundu Vanguard, a support group of the African Democratic Congress.

Senator Akobundu recalled how he moved a motion on December 11, 2024, lamenting delays on the strategic Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road. Following his motion, the Senate resolved to:

i. Urge the Federal Ministry of Works to immediately release funds for completion of the road during the dry season of the year.

ii. Mandate the Committee on Works to investigate the causes of delay and report back within two weeks; and

iii. Appropriate funds for the project in the 2025 budget.

Two months later, an additional sum of N14.37bn was approved for the road by the federal government. However, the Abia State Government stepped in and took over reconstruction of the road under a refund arrangement with the federal government. Akobundu commended Governor Alex Otti for the initiative and the quality of work being done, adding: “I do not play politics of division and bitterness. That was why I was present and spoke when the governor flaged-off the reconstruction. That road is for our people, and anyone who contributes to its reconstruction deserves commendation.”

In the same vein, Senator Akobundu hailed Hon. Sam Onuigbo for his persistent efforts on the project even long after he left the National Assembly. He said such efforts reflect Hon. Onuigbo’s commitment to development and good governance. Senator Akobundu concluded by saying that the interest of the State and her people should always come first and take precedence over personal ambitions, partisan politics, or individual gain.
