Hon. Berger Alfred has been elected as the new Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly following an emergency sitting of the lawmakers on Sunday.

Alfred, who was among the four members earlier suspended by the immediate past Speaker, was chosen to lead the assembly shortly after the House resolved to lift the suspension placed on the affected members.

The development comes on the heels of the sudden resignation of the former Speaker earlier today, paving the way for Alfred’s emergence as the new presiding officer of the assembly.
