The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has presented cheques totalling ₦2.317 billion to 2,971 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased police officers under the Nigeria Police Force’s Group Life Assurance, Group Personal Accident and IGP Family Welfare Schemes.
The presentation was held on Thursday, September 3, 2026, as part of efforts by the Force to provide financial support to families of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The beneficiaries comprise families of police officers who died in service and were covered under the 2017/2018, 2018/2019, 2020/2021, 2021/2022, 2022/2023 and 2024/2025 insurance policy years. The payments also include outstanding balances recovered from insurance companies following earlier partial settlements.
Speaking during the presentation, IGP Disu described the exercise as more than the disbursement of financial benefits, stressing that it represents an institutional responsibility to families of officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to Nigeria.
He acknowledged that no financial compensation could replace a lost loved one but said the payments would provide practical support to affected families while reaffirming the Force’s commitment to their welfare.
The IGP noted that police personnel continue to operate in a challenging security environment, making significant sacrifices in the line of duty across the country.
He assured families of fallen officers that the Nigeria Police Force would continue to recognise their sacrifices and explore legitimate avenues of support for their welfare and that of their dependants.
Reaffirming personnel welfare as a cardinal priority of his administration, Disu said the Force would continue to pursue initiatives aimed at improving the welfare and working conditions of police personnel, including healthcare, accommodation and other legitimate benefits.
He also directed the Force Insurance Unit to intensify sensitisation across Commands and Formations to ensure that officers and their families are adequately informed about their insurance entitlements and the procedures for accessing them.
The Force Insurance Officer, ACP Lydia Ameh, commended the IGP for his support and leadership in prioritising the resolution of outstanding insurance claims and improving access to benefits for police personnel and their families.
Ameh said the progress made by the Force Insurance Unit in recovering pending entitlements and strengthening claims administration demonstrated the importance attached to ensuring that eligible beneficiaries receive their legitimate benefits.
She reaffirmed the Unit’s commitment to improving the efficiency of the insurance process, increasing awareness among personnel and safeguarding the interests of police families.
The IGP also commended the Force’s insurance partners for their cooperation, urging them to ensure the prompt settlement of legitimate claims.
According to him, timely insurance payments can provide a vital lifeline to families that have lost their breadwinners.
The Nigeria Police Force said it remains committed to protecting the welfare, dignity and wellbeing of its personnel and their families, while ensuring that the sacrifices of officers who gave their lives in service to the nation are not forgotten.
