The suspects, identified as 24-year-old Nzubechi Chinagorom and 25-year-old Chinonso Chibundu, both from Olokoro in Umuahia South Local Government Area, were apprehended following a joint operation by police officers and members of the Olokoro Community Vigilante.

According to the police, the incident occurred on May 25, 2026, when Chinagorom allegedly entered the residence of 32-year-old Amarachi Chinyereugo and attempted to forcibly take away her two-week-old baby girl. A struggle reportedly ensued between the suspect and the child’s mother, during which Chinagorom allegedly assaulted and stabbed the woman with a kitchen knife. The baby reportedly fell and struck her head during the altercation.

Police said Chibundu remained outside the residence and allegedly acted as a lookout while the incident unfolded.

Following the victim’s distress call, the suspects fled the scene but were later apprehended at a nearby bus stop. Authorities said the two men were allegedly found consuming substances suspected to be hard drugs at the time of their arrest.

The mother and her child were immediately taken to a hospital for treatment and have since recovered, according to the police.

Exhibits were recovered during the investigation, which was conducted by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court on June 2, 2026.

The Abia State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and urged residents to support security efforts by reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency hotlines.

The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command.
