Abia politician declares commitment to governorship contest, promises transparent and people-centred leadership

Eric Mucheya Opah, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship hopeful in Abia State ahead of the 2027 election, has dismissed speculations about a possible political alliance with other governorship contenders, insisting that he remains firmly in the race under the platform of the APC.

Opah made this known during a press briefing at his campaign office on Azikiwe Road, Umuahia, the Abia State capital, where he addressed reports surrounding possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

He maintained that he was not negotiating or operating any alliance with another candidate in the APC governorship contest, stressing that his political ambition remained intact.

“I want to assure and reassure Abians that Eric Opah is in the race as a candidate of the APC. I am not in an alliance with anyone as far as the APC governorship contest is concerned,” he stated.

The APC hopeful also declared that his aspiration was anchored on presenting what he described as a credible alternative to the people of Abia State.

According to him, his proposed administration would prioritise transparency, empathy and accountability, with particular attention to policies affecting ordinary residents and business owners.

He identified the state’s tax regime as one of the areas requiring urgent review, arguing that although taxation remains necessary for government revenue, the system should not impose excessive burdens on individuals, traders and entrepreneurs.

Opah said his proposed government would examine existing tax policies to ensure that taxation reflects the economic realities of residents and businesses.

He also outlined plans to review issues surrounding civil servants who were disengaged by the present administration, particularly cases where affected workers may have been unjustly dismissed.

The candidate further expressed concern over the reported premature retirement of directors after eight years in service, saying his administration would examine the policy.

He said his vision was to establish a government whose achievements would be measured by tangible improvements in the lives of citizens rather than publicity.

Opah added that preparations for the party’s electioneering activities were underway and that the campaign would be formally flagged off in due course.
