President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major subsidy to make kidney dialysis more affordable for Nigerians. With the intervention, the cost of each dialysis session has been reduced from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000, bringing much-needed relief to thousands of patients battling kidney-related diseases.

The subsidy is already being implemented in federal medical centres and teaching hospitals across the country’s six geopolitical zones, including:Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute-Metta, LagosFederal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, AbujaUniversity College Hospital (UCH), IbadanFederal Medical Centre (FMC), OwerriUniversity of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), MaiduguriFederal Medical Centre (FMC), AbeokutaLagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), LagosFederal Medical Centre (FMC), AzareUniversity of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), BeninUniversity of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), CalabarAccording to government officials, more federal hospitals will be included before the end of the year to expand nationwide access.
It would be recalled that in 2023, President Tinubu also approved free cesarean sections (C-sections) for pregnant women in federal hospitals—an initiative aimed at improving maternal health and reducing preventable deaths.
The new dialysis subsidy, alongside previous healthcare interventions, underscores the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to ensure that no Nigerian is denied access to essential healthcare due to financial constraints.
