Reports have surfaced indicating that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu may soon announce the successor to Professor Mahmood Yakubu as the next Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Although the President is said to be keeping his preferred choice close to his chest, sources suggest that at least five prominent Nigerians are under consideration for the highly sensitive position.
According to the report, those being speculated as possible nominees include:
Justice Abdullahi Mohammed Liman, a judge of the Court of Appeal.
Lai Olurode, a former INEC national commissioner and retired professor at the University of Lagos.
Kenneth Ukeagu, a former director of procurement at INEC.
Sam Olumekun, the current INEC National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education.
Insiders reveal that President Tinubu has been advised to expand the list of nominees and review his options before forwarding names to the National Assembly for screening. This, according to the sources, would broaden the selection process and ensure the appointment of a chairman widely accepted as credible, neutral, and capable of overseeing Nigeria’s electoral processes.
