In a letter dated August 26, 2025, and signed by Chief Alex Ejesieme (SAN) of Madiba Chambers, Obi’s legal team accused Adeyanju of publishing “false, malicious, and grossly defamatory” statements on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, @adeyanjudeji, as well as on Facebook and WhatsApp. The publications, the lawyers said, were calculated to injure Obi’s reputation before Nigerians and the international community.
According to the letter, Adeyanju allegedly described Obi as a “religious bigot,” “fraud,” “scam,” and a politician who misappropriated billions of Anambra State funds for personal and family use. He was also accused of repeatedly branding Obi as corrupt, dishonest, and unfit for public office.
Obi’s lawyers described these claims as “reckless falsehoods, devoid of any factual foundation,” insisting that they have caused grave reputational and political damage to their client, who they described as “a respected statesman, accomplished businessman, and credible political leader of repute.”
The letter further stated that Adeyanju’s posts were widely disseminated across multiple platforms, thereby compounding the damage to Obi’s reputation and misleading the public.
Demands by Obi’s Legal Team
Obi’s lawyers issued a seven-day ultimatum to Adeyanju, demanding that he:
- Immediately delete all defamatory posts made against Obi on all social media handles.
- Issue a full, unreserved, and public apology, to be published across his X and Facebook accounts, as well as in three national dailies of wide circulation in Nigeria.
The letter warned that failure to comply would leave Obi with no option but to seek legal redress, including:
A claim for aggravated damages for defamation.
An injunction restraining Adeyanju from further defamatory publications.
Full recovery of legal costs.
The legal notice highlighted multiple instances dating back to 2022, where Adeyanju allegedly accused Obi of corruption, fraud, and religious bigotry. Obi’s team described these as part of a “calculated campaign of malicious fabrications” aimed at tarnishing his image and generating undue media sensationalism.
Chief Alex Ejesieme, SAN, emphasized that the matter would be pursued in court if Adeyanju failed to act promptly, urging him to avoid the “needless expense and embarrassment of litigation.”
