The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued two contradictory letters to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the conduct of its state congresses in Cross River, Plateau, and Kebbi States, sparking confusion within party ranks.

In a letter dated Thursday, September 25, 2025, and signed by the PDP National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, the party informed INEC of the postponement of the state congresses in the three states. The letter, which was acknowledged by INEC on September 26, 2025, cited “unforeseen circumstances and operational logistic challenges” as reasons for the postponement, noting that a new date would be communicated later.

However, in another letter dated Friday, September 26, 2025, and signed by the PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu, the party contradicted the earlier communication, affirming that the state congresses in the three states will proceed as originally scheduled. The second letter emphasized that any communication to INEC without the signatures of both the National Secretary and National Chairman should not be honored.

The conflicting directives have raised questions about internal coordination within the PDP leadership as the party continues preparations for its nationwide congresses ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Analysts say the situation could deepen existing tensions in the party, especially in the affected states, where preparations for congresses are already at advanced stages.

INEC is yet to issue a formal response to the contradictory letters as stakeholders await clarification on whether the congresses will proceed or be postponed.
