The Mayor of Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, Ambassador Innocent Chiedozie Uruakpa, has embarked on an ambitious wave of infrastructural development, marking the first major transformation of the LGA since its creation. The rapid progress, which cuts across key sectors, is being delivered in synergy with the Governor Alex Otti–led administration, whose commitment to rebuilding Abia State continues to inspire local leaders.

One of the most significant projects under construction is the rehabilitation and expansion of the Obikabia Ultra-Modern Market, where over 308 stalls and lock-up shops are nearing completion. The redesign also includes mini-warehouses, an abattoir equipped with a solar-powered borehole, and an industrial cold room.
“We are expanding the market to accommodate more stalls… floor the entire market, provide waste buckets, install two gates, supply solar-powered electricity, and ensure 24-hour security,” Mayor Uruakpa told newsmen during an inspection tour of project sites.
Another monumental intervention is the rehabilitation of Ekeukwu Uratta Customary Court, Umuoha, which had long been abandoned before the current administration revived it. Also nearing completion is the first-ever Legislative Council Hall in the history of the LGA. The facility includes a legislative chamber, administrative offices, plenary hall, and offices for all 10 councillors. Supervisory Councillor for Works, Mr. Clement Ugorji, described the project as a “milestone long overdue.”
Mayor Uruakpa attributed the LGA’s developmental breakthroughs to Governor Otti’s visionary leadership, saying the governor’s achievements across the state have served as a major motivation to his team. “This is only a tip of the iceberg,” he stated.
Other projects inspected by the Mayor and his team include:
Obikabia–Umuoleke–Umuchima Road (awaiting asphalt)
Umuorisa Community Hall, Agburuike Nsulu
Avo–Umuola, Eziama Road, Ntigha (preparing for asphalt)
The Abia Airport Project, Nsulu
ongoing asphalting of Ntigha–Nbawsi–Umuala Road
Umuomaiukwu Smart School Project
Umuomaiukwu Ukwu Health Centre, Avo Ntigha Evening Market, among others.
Mayor Uruakpa also highlighted the LGA’s achievements in human capital development. The recently concluded “Back to Farm” Agricultural Empowerment Programme, which covered poultry, piggery, pepper, honey, and poultry feed production, recorded massive success. Additionally, 80 youths have benefited from the Telchris ICT training sponsorship, with more to join.
The LGA also announced free WAEC registration for 100 students, while undergraduates of Isiala Ngwa North origin and residents are receiving ₦50,000 bursaries.
In the area of rural water supply, the Mayor disclosed the installation of 10 solar-powered boreholes, one in each ward across the LGA, including Umuosonyike, Mbubo, Umuati, Umungasi, Umuoiyiukwu, Umuomai, Umuoke, Imerem, St. David Uratta, and Umulenwa villages.
“We are all witnesses to Gov. Otti’s revolutionary infrastructural development across the state… any elected office holder who fails to measure up can only blame himself,” the Mayor said, reaffirming his commitment to sustaining the momentum.
He assured residents that more impactful projects are underway as Isiala Ngwa North continues to experience rapid growth and rising demand for infrastructure.
The inspection team also included the Leader of the Legislative Arm, Hon. Alvan Chima; Deputy Leader, Victor Onwere; eight other councillors; Chief of Staff to the Mayor, Barr. Chinkwe Ogbonna; LGA Secretary, Chisom Nwogbe; Supervisory Councillor for Works, Clement Ugorji; Supervisory Councillor for Health, Mrs. Nkechi Chibueze; among others.
