Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District, Senator Austin Akobundu has expressed delight at the rate women are assuming leadership positions across sectors of the nation. He described the huge success women are making of the leadership positions they occupy as highly commendable and a justification for the Nigerian society to begin to adjust to the realities of the leadership shift sweeping across the country.

Akobundu stated this today as the world marks International Women’s Day.

While felicitating with Nigerian women, the Senator used the opportunity to congratulate Prof. Ursula Ngozi Akanwa, who was recently appointed the 7th Vice-Chancellor of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), describing the development as both welcoming and a recognition of the leadership qualities women possess. He urged the nation to continue to tap into the vast leadership prowess of women for a more balanced society.

Akobundu further stated that the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, “Give to Gain”, and his belief in the ability of women to turn around the fortunes of families and society are what is driving his numerous skills acquisition and empowerment programmes targeted at women from across Abia Central Senatorial District with the aim of turning them to elite entrepreneurs. “In Giving to Gain, we invest in women through education, skills acquisition programmes, empowerment initiatives, and leadership opportunities. When we do this, it is the whole world that gains,” he asserted.

He further expressed delight at the results of the programmes as a lot of the female beneficiaries have opened their own production lines and are excelling in their areas of specialisation.

While congratulating the women on their Day, Senator Akobundu promised to keep supporting them through opportunities to become leaders in their chosen endeavours.
