The approval was granted during Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The council also directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) still processing contracts under the 2024 Appropriation to conclude their procurement procedures by the end of September 2025.
Briefing State House Correspondents after the meeting, Minister of Transportation Sai’du Alkali said the bus terminals will be strategically located in Abeokuta (South-West), Gombe (North-East), Kano (North-West), Lokoja (North-Central), Onitsha (South-East), and Ewu, Edo State (South-South).
According to the minister, the initiative marks the first major government intervention in road transport infrastructure beyond road construction. He explained that the locations were chosen based on their economic viability and potential to boost transportation efficiency.
“It has come to the notice of the ministry that despite the significance of road transportation in Nigeria, there are no proper bus terminals to cater to the needs of millions of commuters,” Alkali said. “As a result, we have witnessed rising crime rates, increased road accidents, and the proliferation of arms and ammunition on our highways.”
He added that the ministry sought and obtained FEC’s approval to address these challenges by constructing modern terminals equipped to meet safety, security, and operational needs for road transport across Nigeria.
