The notice, dated 5 January 2026, was brought pursuant to Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and was endorsed by twenty-six (26) members of the House—representing more than the constitutionally required two-thirds majority of the Assembly.
In a letter dated 8 January 2026, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule DSSRS, formally forwarded a copy of the notice to Governor Fubara at the Government House, Port Harcourt.
According to the Speaker, the Assembly received the notice of allegations on January 8 and is acting in strict compliance with Sections 188 (1) and (2) of the Constitution. The governor has been requested to respond to the allegations as stipulated by law.
The letter emphasized that Governor Fubara’s attention has been drawn to the relevant constitutional provisions guiding impeachment proceedings and urged him to reply accordingly.
This development marks a significant escalation in the political tension within Rivers State, as impeachment proceedings against a sitting governor are rare and carry far-reaching political and governance implications.
As of the time of filing this report, the Rivers State Government has yet to issue an official response to the impeachment notice.
