Fayose said he had earlier disclosed the alleged payment during a national television interview, a claim Governor Seyi Makinde reportedly dismissed while challenging him to provide evidence. In response, the former governor made public what he described as official documents to substantiate his assertion.
According to Fayose, only ₦4.5 billion was eventually disbursed to victims of the Ibadan explosion, while the remaining funds were allegedly diverted for other purposes. He further alleged that the funds were used to pursue political ambitions, which he claimed has contributed to internal crises within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor Makinde’s repeated criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration.
Fayose stated that although it is not his usual practice to disclose official government documents, he was compelled to do so in the interest of transparency and accountability. He argued that once details of private meetings with the President were taken to the public space, it became necessary for full disclosure.
The former governor challenged Governor Makinde to take legal action if his claims were false, insisting that he stands by his allegations. He also claimed to be in possession of documents relating to other intervention funds allegedly received by the Oyo State Government from the Federal Government but not disclosed to the public.
In addition, Fayose alleged that he has documentary evidence on the actual Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of Oyo State, which he said differs from figures publicly presented by the state government, noting that further details would be revealed at a later time.
“My name is still Ayo Fayose. I don’t say what I can’t prove,” he said.
As of the time of filing this report, the Oyo State Government had yet to issue an official response to the allegations.
