In a formal notice dated March 2, 2026, and addressed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the party disclosed that all congresses in the state have been suspended until further notice. The APC said the decision followed ongoing consultations and the need to conclude preparatory and administrative processes to ensure an orderly, transparent and credible exercise.

The party clarified that the only process currently approved in Zamfara State is the election of three delegates from each local government area to participate in the APC National Convention. It added that a revised schedule of activities would be communicated to INEC in due course, in compliance with the Electoral Act 2022 and party regulations.

Political watchers and party insiders, however, suggest the postponement may be connected to unfolding political realignments in the state. According to sources, the delay is aimed at giving Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, time to conclude consultations ahead of a possible defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, a development that could reshape the party’s leadership structure in the state.

The APC has not officially commented on the defection speculation, maintaining that the postponement is an administrative step to ensure a credible and transparent congress process in Zamfara State.
