The Federal Executive Council (FEC), chaired by President Bola Tinubu, has approved a five-year moratorium on the establishment of new federal tertiary educational institutions across Nigeria.

The decision, taken during Wednesday’s FEC meeting, affects universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education nationwide.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, explained that the move was necessary to address challenges in the sector, stressing that the problem is no longer access to federal tertiary education but the proliferation of institutions. He noted that this duplication has led to a decline in both infrastructure and manpower quality.
