Hon. Mascot Uzor Kalu, the 2023 governorship candidate for the All Progressive Party (APP), has officially declared his intention to contest for the governorship of Abia State in 2027, this time under the banner of the All Progressive Congress (APC). Kalu, who recently defected to the ruling APC, made the announcement during a welcome event at his political office in Umuahia on Saturday, October 25, 2025.

Addressing supporters, Kalu pledged to deliver an inclusive and transparent government, emphasizing unity and effective governance. “My interest in this contest is to unify Abians and offer transparent governance where local governments will receive their allocations and work with them,” he stated.

In his speech, Kalu reflected on his 2023 candidacy, noting that he congratulated incumbent Governor Alex Otti after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Otti the winner, despite reported irregularities. Choosing not to challenge the results in court, Kalu said he respected the people’s call for change. He acknowledged some progress under Otti’s administration but criticized it for falling short of its ambitious 2023 campaign promises.

Kalu expressed optimism about Abia’s future, stating, “I stand before you today with humility, conviction, and a renewed sense of hope, and I confirm that the future is bright.” His declaration has set the stage for a competitive 2027 governorship race in Abia State.
