Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri on Sunday formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), ending weeks of speculation in a colorful event attended by thousands of supporters.

The defection ceremony, held in Yenagoa, the state capital, drew crowds from all eight local government areas of Bayelsa. Supporters, clad in white t-shirts emblazoned with APC insignia, filled the venue, while others took to major streets in the city, singing and drumming in celebration.
Governor Diri, who recently resigned his membership from the PDP, announced his switch to the APC during the event, solidifying his alignment with the federal ruling party.
Several high-profile political figures were in attendance to witness the occasion. Among them were Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno; Delta State Governor Elder Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa; Ondo State Governor Orimisan Aiyedatiwa; former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole; and Minister of Regional Development, Engineering Abubakar Momoh.
The defection marks a significant shift in Bayelsa’s political landscape, potentially reshaping alliances ahead of future elections.
