…We Must Not Abandon His Family

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday declared that political associates must stand firmly by the family of late Senator Barinada Barry Mpigi, announcing a N500 million support fund by the Rivers State Rainbow Coalition to sustain his legacy.

Speaking at a Night of Tribute in honour of the late Senator held in Port Harcourt on Thursday, Wike stressed that beyond glowing tributes, practical support for the deceased’s family was paramount.

“Forming committees for burial is not enough. We must show clearly that we will not abandon the family he left behind,” he said.

The Minister, who was accompanied by his wife, Justice Eberechi Wike, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees Chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, Senator Sandy Onor, PDP National Vice Chairman (South South), Chief Dan Orbih, Paramount ruler of Emohua Kingdom and Chairman of the South-South Monarchs Forum, Ohna Sergeant Chidi Awuse, among others, described the late senator as a fearless and dependable ally, who stood firm during difficult political moments, noting that true character is revealed in times of adversity.

According to him, Mpigi remained loyal when others faltered, contributing significantly to political stability and effective representation in Rivers State.

“When we had political challenges, Barry was always coming to my house to show solidarity and commitment. One day, he came very early in the morning, he looked at me and said, master, no matter the situation, I will never leave you,” Wike said, while fighting tears.

The Minister also eulogiced the commitment of Senator Mpigi to the Ogoni people, narrating the roles he played in ensuring the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology, Ogoni.

Wike added that the N500 million intervention would be used to establish a foundation for the family, aimed at providing long-term support and preserving the legacy of the late lawmaker.

Political leaders across party lines also paid glowing tributes, describing Mpigi as a committed statesman, bridge-builder and loyal party man whose death has created a major vacuum in Rivers politics.

Speaking on behalf of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Tony Okocha described the late senator as “a consummate politician, gentle, friendly and deeply committed to the growth of the party,” adding that his passing was a painful loss to the political family.

The Coalition of Political Parties in Rivers State equally extolled Mpigi’s loyalty and devotion, recalling his active participation in political consultations even during illness.

In an emotional tribute, former senator and Chairman of the Rivers State Elders Forum, Magnus Abe, said the late lawmaker’s impact would remain indelible.

“We are not gathered merely because a man has died, but because of the life he lived. Barry died at a time when his services were most needed, but his contributions to Ogoni, Rivers State and Nigeria will never be forgotten,” Abe said.

He noted that many developmental strides in Ogoni land bore the imprint of the late senator, adding that generations yet unborn would remember him for his sacrifices.

Also, the Ambassador- Designate to the Republic of Ireland, Chief OCJ Okocha (SAN), described Mpigi as a patriotic Rivers State man, noting the roles he played in ensuring the Senate’s confirmation of his appointment as an ambassador.

In a moving family tribute, the Registrar of the Federal University of Technology, Tai, and younger brother of the deceased, Monday Douglas Mpigi, described him as the backbone of the family.

“He was the rock of our family, very dependable and always there for everyone. He was a safe harbour for people’s worries and joy. He believed in people even when they did not believe in themselves,” he said.

He added that the massive turnout of mourners reflected the depth of lives the late senator touched.

“No wonder this hall is filled with people. Many who die do not have such a gathering because they were not there for others the way he was,” he noted, urging supporters not to lose hope as “Barry lives on through the lives he impacted.”

Also speaking, Chairman of the Rivers State Elders Council, Ferdinand Alabraba, described Mpigi as a seasoned lawmaker and voice of reason.

“Barry’s demise leaves a vacuum that will not be easily filled. He was humble, firm in conviction, and generous in spirit. His life was a testament to service to his constituents, Rivers State, and Nigeria,” he said.

He added that the late senator’s contributions to political discourse and community development were profound, noting that “even at 62, he still had much to offer.”

Similarly, Senator Osita Ngwu recounted his working relationship with the late lawmaker in the 10th Senate, describing him as result-driven and relentless.

“What struck me was his constant drive. He was always looking for ways to get things done. He moved key motions, including on the East-West Road, and pursued them with determination,” Ngwu said.

“For the three years I knew him, I spoke with him almost daily. He was always active and committed. One thing we never imagined was that we would not see him again,” he added.

Also, Senator Allwell Onyesoh described Mpigi as a calm but highly effective leader whose influence was deeply felt.

“I met Barry in 1997 and saw a man of unusual resilience. He inspired people quietly but powerfully. He was visible, active and completely devoted to Rivers State and Nigeria,” Onyesoh said.

He credited the late senator with championing key development initiatives, including the Federal University of Environment, noting that “he pursued such causes day and night.”

“He was a workaholic and a soldier’s soldier. I do not know how to say goodbye,” he added.

The late Senator Mpigi, who died on February 19, 2026, was widely regarded as a grassroots mobiliser and committed public servant whose legacy of service, loyalty and generosity continues to resonate across political and community lines.

Dignitaries at the event urged his family and associates to uphold his enduring values, even as prayers were offered for the repose of his soul.
