Several prominent APC figures from the zone have declared interest in the seat, setting the stage for a competitive primary. Among the leading aspirants are former Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, former members of the House of Representatives Emeka Atuma and Sam Onuigbo, as well as former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Christopher Enweremadu. All four have commenced consultations across the district as they seek to secure the party’s ticket.

Senator Nkechi Nwaogu:
Relies on Experience and Grassroots Appeal
Nwaogu, a two-term senator who represented Abia Central from 2007 to 2015 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), previously served in the House of Representatives between 2003 and 2007 on the platform of the defunct ANPP.
She is widely regarded as a grassroots politician, with her tenure in the Senate noted for constituency projects, particularly in rural electrification across several communities.
Her political strength is expected to come from Osisioma, while she is also likely to be competitive in parts of Isiala Ngwa South. However, challenges may arise in Ikwuano and Isiala Ngwa North, with Umuahia North and South projected as key battlegrounds.

Rt Hon Christopher Enweremadu:
Banks on Equity, Cross-Party Alliances
Enweremadu, a former Speaker and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, is seen as leveraging both his experience and political networks. A close ally of former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, his recent defection to the APC has fueled speculation of broader political alignments within the state.
He has intensified consultations across party lines and is positioning his campaign on equity, highlighting that Isiala Ngwa North is yet to produce a senator for Abia Central. His support base is expected to be strongest in his home area, while other parts of the district remain competitive.

Hon Emeka Atuma:
Counts on Local Influence, Track RecordAtuma, a former federal lawmaker who represented Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency from 2003 to 2007, is also a familiar contender in the Abia Central race. Known for his grassroots engagement, he is credited by supporters with attracting development initiatives to his constituency even outside public office.
His main contest is likely to come from within Ikwuano, where he shares strong ties with local stakeholders. Other parts of the district, including Umuahia North and South, are expected to be open grounds for contest among the aspirants.

Hon Sam Onuigbo:
Seen as Strong Contender in Consensus Scenario
Onuigbo, a former Commissioner for Finance and two-term member of the House of Representatives (2015–2023), is regarded as a strategic and low-profile contender. There are indications he may enjoy the backing of sections of the APC leadership and key stakeholders.
While his influence appears strongest in Ikwuano and Umuahia, his reach in the Ngwa axis may be limited. However, support from the Ochendo Umuahia political family, along with a possible signal from Rt Hon Stanley Ohajuruka, is seen as capable of strengthening his standing in Umuahia North and South. Nonetheless, he is widely considered a frontrunner if the party opts for a consensus candidate.
Battle Lines Drawn Ahead of Primaries
With consultations intensifying and alliances taking shape, the APC primary for Abia Central is shaping up to be a keenly contested race. Zoning considerations, grassroots structures, and party dynamics are expected to play decisive roles in determining the eventual flagbearer.
As the countdown to the primaries continues, attention now turns to how the aspirants consolidate support across the district—and ultimately, who secures the party’s ticket for the 2027 senatorial election.
