A governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Mascot Uzor Kalu, has raised alarm over what he described as a planned “kangaroo endorsement” of a candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Kalu alleged that a stakeholders’ meeting scheduled for April 12, 2026, in Umuahia was being misrepresented as a gathering to mobilise support for the re-election campaign of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to him, credible information suggests the meeting is instead aimed at imposing a preferred aspirant on the party through a pre-arranged endorsement.
Kalu claimed that members of the APC State Executive Committee, Local Government Area chairmen, and selected stakeholders were directed to mobilise 20 persons per ward for the meeting, under what he described as false pretences.
The aspirant warned that any consensus arrangement allegedly orchestrated by the APC State Working Committee (SWC) without the involvement of all aspirants would be considered illegitimate and void.
He stressed that such a move would face strong opposition, insisting that the party must uphold internal democracy, fairness, and due process.
“The APC in Abia must not be reduced to a tool for personal ambition or manipulated to serve narrow interests,” Kalu stated, cautioning party executives against acting as agents of endorsement for any individual.
Reaffirming his position, Kalu declared that he would not step down for any aspirant, emphasizing that every Abian has the constitutional right to contest for political office.
He further warned members of the APC SWC to avoid participation in meetings convened by aspirants, noting that any attempt to undermine the integrity of the party would be firmly resisted.
Kalu concluded by urging party leaders to remain neutral in order to preserve unity and credibility within the APC in Abia State ahead of the 2027 governorship race.
