The Umuahia South Local Government Council has announced the suspension of Igba Ekpe activities traditionally associated with the Iriji (New Yam) festival across the LGA until further notice.

The decision was taken at an emergency peace and security meeting held on Thursday, August 28, 2025, where the council reviewed rising cases of cultism, drug abuse, and other related vices that have led to loss of lives in the area.

In a statement signed by the Executive Mayor, Hon. Engr. Chinedu Enwereuzo, the council said intelligence reports had linked certain festivities to insecurity and criminal activities.

The council directed traditional rulers, community leaders, and youth groups to enforce full compliance with the suspension order, warning that violators would face the full weight of the law.

According to the statement, the suspension will be reviewed once security risks are addressed, while cultural identity will continue to be promoted through lawful and safe activities.

Mayor Enwereuzo stressed that the safety of lives and property in Umuahia South remains the government’s top priority and called for calm, unity, and cooperation, particularly from the Okwu and Umujata communities of Olokoro Clan.
