Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Spain, Ambassador Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, PhD, has presented his letter of credence to the Spanish Government, marking the commencement of his diplomatic assignment in Madrid.
The ceremony took place at the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the Nigerian envoy formally submitted his credentials in line with established diplomatic protocol, which also represents a significant diplomatic precursor to the formal presentation of his Letters of Credence to His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain.
Ambassador Ikpeazu was accompanied by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Madrid, Ambassador Ferdinand Nwoye, and the Embassy’s Consul, Mrs. Binta Dala, M.C. The delegation was received by Ambassador Adrián Martín Couce, who welcomed the Nigerian envoy on behalf of the Spanish Government.
Speaking after the ceremony, Ambassador Ikpeazu described the occasion as the beginning of a new phase in bilateral relations between Nigeria and Spain. He expressed optimism that both countries would strengthen cooperation in key sectors, including trade, investment, tourism, renewable energy, technology, and cultural exchange.
“This marks the beginning of a renewed partnership between Nigeria and Spain. We look forward to deepening collaboration in areas that will deliver mutual benefits to both nations,” he said.
The presentation of copies of credentials is a standard diplomatic procedure that formally notifies the host country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs of an ambassador’s appointment and authorizes the envoy to begin official diplomatic engagements. It precedes the formal presentation of the Letters of Credence to the Head of State, which signifies the full assumption of ambassadorial responsibilities.
With this milestone completed, Ambassador Ikpeazu, a former Governor of Abia State, is expected to continue high-level diplomatic engagements ahead of presenting his Letters of Credence to His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain, an event that will formally inaugurate his tenure as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain.
