The Labour Party in Abia State has responded strongly to recent comments by the All Progressives Congress (APC) concerning the political representation of Bende Federal Constituency, insisting that businessman and philanthropist, Dr. Chima Anyaso, possesses the integrity and capacity required to represent the constituency in 2027.

In a statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Iroegbu Emenike, the Labour Party accused the APC of attempting to undermine the existing zoning and rotational understanding within the constituency while projecting Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, as the only competent candidate for the position.

The party described the APC’s position as “defensive” and “arrogant,” arguing that leadership should be built on honor, equity, and respect for agreements reached among stakeholders.

According to the statement, both the Ikwuishi and Umunna blocs of Bende Federal Constituency are blessed with capable individuals and that competence should not be monopolized by one political figure or group.

The Labour Party questioned Kalu’s commitment to fairness, stating that failure to respect what it described as a “gentleman’s agreement” raises concerns about trust and leadership integrity.

The party also dismissed the APC’s claim of an independent opinion poll allegedly favoring its candidate, describing it as unreliable and politically motivated. It argued that a party struggling with internal cohesion and transparent primaries could not credibly conduct a public opinion survey.

Defending its preferred aspirant, the Labour Party said Dr. Chima Anyaso has demonstrated proven leadership and competence through entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and educational development initiatives.

The statement noted that Anyaso, whom it described as a globally respected entrepreneur, has spent over 18 years sponsoring free education for children in Bende Federal Constituency without political motives.

It further highlighted his academic exposure, including training at Harvard University, and recent engagements with international audiences at the University of Derby in the United Kingdom.

The party maintained that Anyaso’s personal integrity, transparency, and family background distinguish him as a credible leader capable of representing the interests of the people.

The Labour Party also linked its confidence in Anyaso to what it described as the transformative leadership style of Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, saying the current administration has demonstrated that people-oriented governance can deliver tangible progress.

According to the statement, the political landscape in Bende has changed, and voters are now seeking leaders who will respect agreements, uphold integrity, and prioritize development over political titles.

The party expressed confidence that the people of Bende would make their position known during the 2027 general elections.
