Former presidential campaign spokesperson and actor-turned-politician, Barr. Kenneth Okonkwo, has expressed strong reservations over reports circulating on social media that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) may have picked its 2027 vice-presidential candidate from the South-South region.

Reacting to the unconfirmed development, Okonkwo described such a move as “unfortunate,” warning that it would further deepen what he termed the continued marginalisation of the South-East geopolitical zone in Nigeria’s political arrangement.
According to him, the South-East has neither produced a President nor Vice President since the return of democracy in 1999, and denying the region the opportunity to produce either position under the ADC in 2027 would amount to “perpetuating injustice.”
Okonkwo also recalled that the ADC was founded in 2005 by Ralphs Nwosu, an indigene of the South-East, who later sacrificed his leadership position in 2025 to strengthen the opposition coalition aimed at building a better Nigeria.
“He could not have made that sacrifice to marginalise his own people,” Okonkwo stated.
The former Labour Party chieftain maintained that he did not join the coalition to support the continued exclusion of the South-East from key national leadership positions.
“I am of the opinion that if we made the sacrifice to give up the National Chairman and the President, it will amount to unpardonable injustice to deny us the Vice President in 2027,” he said.
Okonkwo further stated that his political involvement is driven by the desire to build a Nigeria where no region or ethnic group is marginalised.
He also disclosed that the only favour he requested from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar — whom he said had publicly declared himself as “the pathway to the presidency of the South-East” — was to demonstrate that commitment by choosing a vice-presidential candidate from the South-East.
“If it is confirmed that he has chosen a candidate from the South-South, I wish him well. I am not favourably disposed to campaigning for any presidential ticket that does not have a person of South-East origin as President or Vice President in 2027,” Okonkwo declared.
