Former Abia State Governor, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, has called for unity, inclusiveness, and a renewed commitment to democratic ideals within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as he chaired the party’s 2026 Elective National Convention in Abuja.
Speaking at the 10th National Convention, Ikpeazu described the gathering as “historic and defining,” noting that it marks a critical turning point for the party following years of internal challenges and leadership crises.
He recalled that the last elective convention was held in October 2021 at Eagle Square, after which the party experienced turbulence that led to the intervention of the National Executive Committee (NEC) in December 2025 and the establishment of a caretaker leadership.
According to Ikpeazu, the 2026 convention, themed “Inclusiveness, Unity, and Renewal,” represents more than a slogan, but a strategic pathway to reposition the PDP as Nigeria’s leading democratic platform.
“The theme speaks directly to our present reality and defines the pathway to our collective future. It calls on us to close ranks, rebuild trust, and reposition our party,” he said.
He emphasized that the convention’s primary objective is the election of a new National Working Committee (NWC) that will lead the party for the next four years, describing the process as both “profoundly democratic and historically symbolic.”
Ikpeazu commended party members across Nigeria for their resilience and loyalty, stating that their steadfast support has kept the PDP “alive, vibrant, and relevant” despite electoral setbacks.
He reaffirmed the party’s determination to rebuild and reclaim its leadership role in Nigeria’s governance, noting that the PDP remains one of the most structured and nationally rooted political parties in the country.
In his remarks, Ikpeazu also acknowledged the contributions of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, praising his “courage, resolve, and uncommon commitment” in sustaining the party during difficult times. He described Wike as a “formidable pillar of strength” whose efforts have helped prevent the party from drifting into irrelevance.
He further recognized the role of former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and other party leaders for their commitment to reconciliation and internal stability.
Addressing members of the incoming National Working Committee, Ikpeazu urged them to prioritize reconciliation, restore discipline, and strengthen internal democracy within the party.
“The duty of genuine reconciliation within our party is not optional; it is fundamental. Your work begins immediately,” he stated.
He also commended the convention planning committee for delivering a successful event despite logistical challenges, and welcomed electoral observers, diplomats, and media organizations for their roles in ensuring transparency and credibility.
Ikpeazu concluded by urging party members to embrace the principles of inclusiveness, unity, and renewal beyond the convention, stressing that the future of the PDP depends on collective commitment.
“Together, we shall rebuild. Together, we shall reconcile. Together, we shall rise again,” he declared.
The convention is expected to usher in a new leadership for the PDP as the party seeks to reposition itself ahead of future electoral contests in Nigeria.
