The appointment, which takes immediate effect, was announced on Monday after President Tinubu formally accepted Egbetokun’s resignation, submitted on grounds of pressing family considerations. The President commended Egbetokun for his decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and praised his professionalism, dedication, and contributions to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture.

Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, was serving a four-year tenure expected to end in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.

In approving Disu’s appointment, President Tinubu cited the nation’s prevailing security challenges and expressed confidence in the Acting IGP’s experience, operational depth, and leadership capacity to provide steady direction for the police during this critical period.

In accordance with the Police Act 2020, the President will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to consider Disu’s nomination for substantive appointment. Upon approval, his name will be forwarded to the Senate of Nigeria for confirmation.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutions, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and adequately equipped to carry out its constitutional responsibilities.
