Akpe’s confirmation followed his nomination by Governor Douye Diri, with lawmakers approving the appointment after a successful screening exercise during plenary in Yenagoa.
Pastor Peter Akpe is a clergyman, administrator, and experienced government functionary. Until his nomination, he served as Chief of Staff to Governor Douye Diri, a strategic position that placed him at the center of policy coordination, executive decision-making, and day-to-day management of government affairs.
In that role, Akpe earned a reputation as a dependable insider with deep knowledge of the workings of the Bayelsa State Government. He has also held other advisory and administrative responsibilities over the years, contributing to governance and political organization within the state.
Beyond politics, Akpe is an ordained pastor, actively involved in faith-based leadership and community development. Supporters believe this dual background in governance and ministry equips him with the temperament and leadership skills required to promote unity and inclusive governance.
The appointment of a new deputy governor followed the death of the former Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who died in office on 11 December 2025 after collapsing at the Government House in Yenagoa. He was later pronounced dead at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.
His burial took place on 30 January 2026, drawing political leaders, traditional rulers, and mourners from across the Niger Delta and beyond.
With his confirmation, Pastor Peter Akpe is expected to immediately assume office and work closely with Governor Diri to sustain policy continuity and drive development across Bayelsa State.
