Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has accused former presidential candidate Peter Obi of misleading his supporters over his political intentions ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a strongly worded statement, Keyamo alleged that Obi recently joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with a prior agreement to emerge as vice-presidential candidate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, rather than contesting the presidency as widely believed by his supporters.

Keyamo maintained that while Obi has the constitutional right to belong to any political party and make political choices, it would be dishonest, in his view, to raise hopes of a presidential ambition while allegedly pursuing a vice-presidential ticket. He described such moves as “pure politics” and urged Obi to be transparent with Nigerians.

The minister further claimed that Obi’s political journey from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Labour Party in 2023, and now to ADC, was aimed at positioning himself as Atiku’s preferred running mate. He warned that Obi’s supporters would feel betrayed if such an announcement is made after ADC’s primaries.

Keyamo also dismissed claims that the ruling party was reacting out of fear to opposition realignments, insisting that public scrutiny of political figures seeking high office is necessary. He argued that Nigerians would ultimately decide in 2027 and cautioned that both Atiku and Obi may have misjudged the nation’s political demographics based on the 2023 election results.

As of the time of filing this report, Peter Obi and the ADC have not responded to the allegations.
