Let me emphasise more on this one.
Senator Austin Akobundu raised the issue of the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road through a motion on the floor of the senate on the 11th of December 2024. In that motion, he lamented how work has since stalled on the road and requested the senate to adopt resolutions urging the federal government to expedite work on the road which he described as a very strategic road but had caused untold hardship to the people due to its dilapidated state.
Following his passionate motion, the Senate adopted the following resolutions:
i. Urge the Federal Ministry of Works to immediately release funds for the completion of the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road during the current dry season; and
ii. Mandate the Committee on Works to urgently investigate and unravel the causes of delays, and determine the extent of failure and report back to the Senate within two weeks for further legislative action.
iii. Appropriate funds for the road project in the 2025 Budget
Two months after the resolution, the federal government approved the sum of N14.37bn hike for the road.
Gladly, the Abia State government has taken over and commenced work on the road.
